IVF/IUI

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) and Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) are two common assisted reproductive technologies used to help couples facing infertility achieve pregnancy.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

IVF involves several steps. First, ovarian stimulation medications are administered to encourage the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Once the eggs mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries using a minor surgical procedure. The retrieved eggs are then combined with sperm in a laboratory setting, where fertilization occurs. The resulting embryos are monitored for several days, typically 3 to 5, before one or more healthy embryos are selected for transfer into the uterus. Any surplus viable embryos can be frozen for future use. IVF is often recommended for women with blocked fallopian tubes, advanced maternal age, severe male factor infertility, or unexplained infertility. The procedure has a higher success rate compared to IUI, especially for certain infertility diagnoses.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is a simpler, less invasive procedure than IVF. It involves preparing and concentrating sperm before placing it directly into the uterus during the woman’s ovulation period. This method increases the chances of sperm reaching the egg and is often used for couples with unexplained infertility, mild male factor infertility, or cervical mucus issues. IUI can be performed with the couple's sperm or donor sperm, depending on the situation.

Comparison and Considerations

The choice between IVF and IUI depends on various factors, including the underlying cause of infertility, age, personal preferences, and previous treatment experiences. While IVF generally offers higher success rates, it is also more invasive and costly. IUI is often seen as a first-line treatment due to its lower cost and simplicity, but it may be less effective for certain infertility issues. Both IVF and IUI require thorough counseling and support, as the emotional and financial aspects can be significant. Consulting with a fertility specialist can help couples make informed decisions based on their unique circumstances.
